Brian Boltz, who runs the Larimer & Norton Mill, inspects an ash billet. Only 10,000 white ash billets — the piece of wood that becomes a bat — will be produced for major-league use at the mill this year, down from 50,000 in 2010.

As ash bats fall out of favor – a trend that coincides with the ash trees’ demise in places like northwestern Pennsylvania – the mills that long supplied them could disappear.
